INANNA
I drew inspiration for Rebirth from my nearly four-decade love affair with the epic Sumerian poem “Inanna: Queen of Heaven and Earth” and from an exquisite terra-cotta relief from Mesopotamia created between 1800 and 1850 BCE.
Bracelet: One ancient symbol of Inanna is the eight-pointed star, or the Star of Venus. The gold disc represents the wheel of the world.
Crown: Constructed from horns; the crown represents the sacred mountain and her connection with heaven.
Cuneiform: On the bricks of the stairs in the painting, in three lines of cuneiform I wrote:
“Brave Warrior Queen Inanna.”
“Love.”
“Queen of the Underworld”
Original painting is 36" x 60", oil. This narrative painting rich in symbols that tell the story, took seven months to paint. Prints come with with a description booklet to add meaning.
